■Time to act

Discover which voices have their say the most about your identity. Give them fitting names.

2.7 Your Beliefs

Whether you think you can, or think you cannot, you are right.

—Henry Ford

■ Some of the inner voices are very loud in their convictions. Sometimes, these are warm sentences like, “Everything will be ok.” But sometimes, these are debilitating sentences like, “I never succeed.” Psychology calls these “belief systems”.

Usually, we have received and internalized these sentences from others or generalized a few of our negative experiences. It also makes sense here to look closely at the sentences and to examine their truth and their effects on you.

Which sentences do I believe about myself/my life?

Separate the sentence from your past experience and your ostensible proofs for its accuracy. Ask yourself: Does this opinion really make sense?

What speaks against it? Under which circumstances is this sentence false?

Was the person from whom I took this over happy and successful?

What would it emotionally, healthily, and financially cost me if I don’t give up this belief?

What would it cost my closest people (family, partner, friends) if I hold on to this belief?

How would my life improve if I change this belief now?

How could I express a new, true belief that makes more sense for me?
